George Necklace

We found out I was pregnant with our fourth child in the midst of the first apple season on our new property. We spent our evenings canning, dehydrating and making apple crisp. As my pregnant belly grew, we worked our land and watched the seasons change. If we had a boy, (we were going to be surprised!) my husband and I felt inspired to name him George, which means “farmer”. It seemed appropriate as we were embarking on our homesteading journey.

In the spring, when the apple trees were in full bloom, George was born three weeks earlier than we were expecting. A few hours after his birth, I knew in my heart that he had Down Syndrome. We took him to the hospital and spent two weeks there as he learned to breathe on his own and eat. That is when we learned he would need open heart surgery.

We cried and prayed and sang hymns and ached to bring our son home. Our three older children were able to peek in at George through his hospital room window. Despite being separated by glass, I felt overwhelming joy at having my family together for a moment.

George had open heart surgery at five months old and recovered well and is thriving. We are all so thankful to have him with us. We look forward to having him help milk cows, collect eggs, give the pigs belly scratches, fill the duck pool, and hold our bunnies.

We are excited to celebrate George’s birthday every spring and rejoice in the beauty of the apple blossoms and all the growth and joy sweet George brings to our lives.
