On August 13th, 2021, we received a call from our obstetrician that our non-invasive prenatal testing showed a 99% chance that our second child would have down syndrome. It was the first thing that we learned about our baby, followed closely by the news that we were having a boy. That evening we chose the name Gentry for our son. There is a lot of fear and uncertainty that comes with a prenatal diagnosis. From the start, it felt imperative that although Gentry would have down syndrome, he would also be so much more. Giving him a name allowed us to begin imaging him as a person rather than a diagnosis.

For the last eight months since his birth, we have had the pleasure of watching his personality grow. One thing that has become apparent is how much he completes our family. He calms his sister’s fire, provides softness to my husband’s intensity, and has redefined my often rigid definition of perfection. He shows us all that meaning and beauty can be just a smile and a healthy day. When choosing a necklace design, we wanted something that encapsulates that notion of fulfillment. The four of us, joining together, to form a whole. The varying stones also represent Gentry’s multifaceted nature. He is more than we could have ever imagined. He is softness, and strength, and love, and light.
