A note from Kenneth's mom:
July is approaching fast and as some of you may already know, July is airway defect awareness month. Wyatt was diagnosed two weeks old with laryngomalacia also known as LM. I’ve become pretty passionate about this defect, researching everything so I would know what to expect. According to doctors, laryngomalacia is a pretty common birth defect with only little knowledge in the medical field. We’ve had to spell out laryngomalacia to more than one nurse/doctor. I’ve had to explain what it is to countless “doctors”. It’s terrifying as a parent, it can cause more than just the floppy airway, but also can cause failure to thrive, poor weight gain, stridor, neck and chest retractions, acid reflux, obstructive or central sleep apnea, speech delay, aspiration, a “simple” cold to any other child is scary but for an LM baby can be even scarier, we’ve spent months in the hospital total in his little life, PTSD and much more. The only thing you can do sometimes is to constantly watch your baby and reposition them as needed. I can go on about it all day, but I’m here to raise awareness because before my son was born, I never heard of it and neither did any of our close friends or family members. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, always stick to your gut feeling even if you think you may sound like your “overreacting” or “overthinking” ASK. My son Wyatt has gone through 4 supraglottoplastys, 1 gtube placement, a nissen wrap, adenoids being removed and revisioned, 3 mri procedures, 5 modified barium swallow studies, 5 sleep studies, 1 ng tube acid reflux testing, pyloric stenosis ultrasound, daily to weekly to monthly weight checks. Our warrior is now 26 pounds at 2 years old come March and still struggling everyday to breathe. Sometimes he will be playing with his sister and struggling to keep up, his stridor becomes loud and he gets clumsy, but no matter what! He keeps going, he is one of the strongest little warriors I know. We are now following up with his pineal cyst he has because it’s grown, and they’re worried about it causing Hydrocephalus, let’s pray it hasn’t grown and they want to do a epiglottopexy this time for his airway since the 4 supraglottoplastys have failed. I don’t want to backtrack since his gtube has now been removed. This necklace symbolizes and means so much to our family because it is all “Wyatt”. The gold bar down the middle signifies strength in the center of your body, his “chakra” his throat chakra needs healing which is why the color “blue” which also happens to be his birthstone and the color for airway defect month! Different shades, but still holds the same meaning. Thank you so much wells cooperative for this beautiful piece of jewelry that will always have a place near and dear to our hearts. Thank you for working with our family.
