”Anderson has been rocking our world since his anatomy scan at 20 weeks. What we thought was the appointment to find out our gender turned into learning of a heart defect and a brain bleed. Flash forward through all the high risk appointments and Anderson decided to keep the surprises coming by being born almost 8 weeks early. It was in the NICU when we received a birth diagnosis of Down Syndrome. During his NICU stay he was on and off oxygen, monitored by a team of multiple specialists. He went on to have two surgeries in the NICU; the first was when he was a little over a month old and he had a Gtube placed. We knew he would have a hard time eating and getting enough calories because of his heart, so the GTube ensured he could get the nutrients he needed. When he was two months old he had his second surgery, a neuro surgery, to have his shunt placed to drain the extra fluid he creates in his head from the bleed that his body can not naturally drain.
68 long days after he was born we could finally take him home from the NICU. Lots of doctors appointments and six months after taking him home, it was time for open heart surgery to repair his complete AV canal defect at nine months old. His heart surgery was followed by some minor complications that required him to have chest tubes in for 8 days and switch to a low fat formula. 12 days after his heart was stopped and he was placed on bypass for repair, we headed home!! All of this leads to his necklace. The Anderson necklace has 3 mountains and a little heart above. The mountains are for his strength, always climbing up, getting stronger and moving mountains with his life. Mountains also bring people higher and Anderson has brought so many people together in prayer. There are three mountains, for the three copies of his 21st chromosome, and also for the 3 surgeries he’s had so far.
Finally, the heart. The heart is for his heart that was repaired, his biggest surgery, and also for the love that he brings with his life.”
