A note from their mother:
The Star Thrower
A man was walking on the beach one day and noticed a boy who was reaching down, picking up a starfish and throwing it in the ocean. As he approached, he called out, “Hello! What are you doing?” The boy looked up and said, “I’m throwing starfish into the ocean”. “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” asked the man. “The tide stranded them. If I don’t throw them in the water before the sun comes up, they’ll die” came the answer. “Surely you realize that there are miles of beach, and thousands of starfish. You’ll never throw them all back, there are too many. You can’t possibly make a difference.” The boy listened politely, then picked up another starfish. As he threw it back into the sea, he said, “It made a difference for that one.”

I have loved this story since I first heard it many years ago, and it held a special place in my heart long before a tiny baby boy with DS was placed in my arms, changing our lives for the better. It gained extra meaning as we traveled across the ocean to adopt our daughter, also born with that little something extra.
We chose the starfish as our necklace for the 321 collection because we truly believe that everyday we can make a difference in the world, and not just make a difference - but BE the difference!
So many people have impacted our lives and made a difference for us and our children. They have paved the way for inclusion, researched and shared best practices for educating individuals with DS, started businesses to teach skills and provide employment for individuals with disabilities, created college programs around the nation, started independent living communities, promoted acceptance, encouraged self advocacy, lobbied for healthcare and so much more. I could not be more grateful for everyone who has made a difference for my children and continue to BE the difference that makes our world a better place. I thought this was the perfect symbol to remind us that each of us can contribute and BE the difference - every single day 💛
