My husband and I have always admired Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel’s central themes of integrity, commitment, honesty and compassion have served as source of inspiration throughout our lives.
Nothing could fully prepare us for the initial shock of a Down Syndrome diagnosis. We had another name picked for our boy. However, when we were only faintly clear on the road we had chosen, we knew that the name Atticus, a character modeling the road less traveled, would be the most fitting for him. We wanted our baby, and consequently us, to embody the enduring steady strength of Atticus Finch.
The second we met him, we knew we choose the perfect name for our son. He has had to endure more in the first few months of his life than most people will in a lifetime. He is our new source of inspiration.
