When I was 15 weeks pregnant, I was told that my baby would be different, I was told that he would be challenging, and that life might be easier if he didn’t exist…the people who told me that couldn’t be more wrong. He was born with an extra chromosome, and it has made him extraordinary in every way imaginable. His personality lights up any room he walks into, and he can brighten people’s days just by existing.

There have been some challenges that come with his diagnosis, but the biggest challenge he faces is with verbal communication. Music has been a huge part of his progress, and one of the songs that he loves to sing along with is Umbrella by Rihanna. The umbrella is a symbol of protection both literally from the elements and figuratively from struggles and adversity. In some cultures, the umbrella symbolizes luck and good fortune and the ability to overcome whatever challenges life throws at you.

We chose the umbrella to represent him because when I look at Clash, I am reminded that you can achieve anything with the right attitude. I know that I will do everything in my power to protect him from anyone or anything that might make him question his worth, but his happiness brings a sense of hope and possibility that shields me from difficult situations.
